- Winnipeg product David Toews stepped on the ice for the first time as a Brandon Wheat King on Friday as the club's training camp continued. The New York Islanders' draft pick left the University of North Dakota this summer in order to join the Wheat Kings. He is one of six 20-year olds currently on the roster and Toews says he hasn't been guaranteed anything. The Wheat Kings' camp continues Saturday with scrimmages at 9:30 a.m. and 6:00 pm. - The Century 21 Cubs captured their fourth straight MacArthur Truck and Trailer Brandon Senior AA Baseball League title Friday night. The Cubs beat the Dick Agencies Classics 3-0 to win the best-of-five championship series 3-1. Mark Derlago tossed a complete-game shutout while Jeff Derlago went for 3-for-4 including a two-run triple in the sixth inning for the Cubs.
- Brandon product Landon Rice and the Manitoba Bisons opened their Canada West football season on a losing note Friday night. The Regina Rams returned three turnovers for touchdowns and rolled to a 45-11 victory against the visiting Bisons. Manitoba returns to action next week when they welcome Alberta for their home opener.
