PETA rally set for Brandon.
An animal rights group will stage a friendly demonstration in Brandon Thursday.
PETA spokesperson Nicole Mathews says two of their Lettuce Ladies will be at the KFC location on Princess Avenue during the noon hour.
Potential vaccination bylaw changes.
The city may change how often you need to give your pet a rabies vaccination.
Current bylaws require cats and dog to be vaccinated every 23 months, but a recently proposed amendment may extend it to every 3 years.
Doctor Sandy Barkley with the Brandon Veterinary Clinic says pets shouldn't be over vaccinated and that extending the window would likely not harm an animal.
First reading to the ammendment has been already been held. No word on when the city will consider it for a second reading.
No timetable for new cop cars useage.
Don't expect to see all of Brandon's new police cruisers to be hitting the roads immediately.
Though the first is already in service and a second should arrive within the next month, Sergeant Doug Thompson says they'll be taking their time rolling them out.
They will replace the existing models are taken out of fleet as it reaching its' end of mileage or if it is in an accident.
The seven new vehicles are a black and white mix as opposed to the primarily white squad cars already on the streets.
Closer look at 3rd street dam.
The city is getting a closer look at the damage to the third street dam.
Director of Engineering Ian Christiansen says divers hit the water on Wednesday and examined the structure.
They took video of the structural damage as well as a physical inspection.
Christiansen says now that the dive is completed, the information will be given to a consulting group to make a recommendation to the city.
Elton Energy project.
Elton Energy is proceeding with plans to develop a small wind energy project. Spokesman Dan Mazier says they're waiting for a permit that will allow them to build a tower.
It would be used to carry out a 2 year wind assessment that will help determine if the project is viable
Mazier says they've finished their model and feasibility study and now it is up to the community to lead the way.
The co-op is looking at putting up one or two wind turbines at a cost of about $5 million dollars. Electricity produced would be used locally.
No City Decals
Brandon city vehicles won't be sporting decals for any causes. City firefighters wanted to put ribbons on emergency vehicles to show support for the military but were turned down.
Mayor Dave Burgess says they don't want to be put in a bad place by having to turn down groups.
City administration has expressed concern that vehicles could be turned into billboards for various causes.
Graffiti committee requested.
At least one city councillor wants the graffiti committee to get active again. A lack of volunteers is the reason it stopped operations.
Jeff Harwood says perhaps the legal community could get involved this time. Mayor Dave Burgess says the city will continue to work on solutions .
Recently a teenager was charged with 36 counts of mischief following a graffiti spree.
Weed concerns on city land.
There are calls for action concerning weeds on city owned property. That includes spraying, which is prohibited under existing bylaws
City spokesman Rick Bailey says they now mow weed infested areas, but spraying is an option of last resort
Bailey says the bylaw would have to be changed to allow spraying on a regular basis.
