Child Porn Bust in Brandon

Brandon police have charged a man in his mid twenties with possession of child pornography.
Police have released few details other than to say their investigation goes back to last November.
The accused appears in court in April

Parks Getting Ready

It will be free to get into provincial parks again this year...but fees have increased once inside.
Camping fees for single night and seasonal rates, along with water and administration fees have gone up.
The reservation system for campsites will open April 5th.

Annexation Disagreement

Cornwallis wants it put on hold but Brandon will go ahead.
The city will  continue the process to annex 122 acres in the southeast corner along the eastern access route.
The owner has made the request.

Sexual Assault Charges

Two male residents of Waywayseecappo have been charged after a 16 year old girl was sexually assaulted.
RCMP say the assault happened last Saturday at a home on the First Nation.
A 25 year old has been charged with sexual assault and a 21 year old has been charged with aggravated sexual assault and several other offences related to the incident.
Police say the accused will not be identified to protect the identity of the victim.
The two will appear in Brandon court Thursday

Tories challenge NDP on Bipole 3.

The Progressive Conservatives are hammering away at the N.D.P. over a multi-billion dollar issue. Party Leader Hugh McFadyen and several other Tory heavyweights were in Brandon Tuesday night to talk about Bipole 3. That's a power line project, planned for 2012, that'll cut through the west side of the province. McFadyen tells 880 CKLQ that the west side route is a big mistake.

The NDP says going down the east side would do major environmental harm to a boreal forest. McFadyen argues the government is doing more long term environmental damage with its so called greener choice.


A representative with the N.D.P. however suggests the provincial Tories are simply playing politics with the Bipole 3 issue. Brandon East M.L.A. Drew Caldwell says this is a case of selective anger and that the provincial opposition is off the environmental mark.

Skating oval closed for season.

A few days of good weather has done in Brandon's outdoor skating oval. The city says the oval and the Hanbury toboggan hill are unsafe melting messes. Effective immediately, both are closed for the season.

Sentence passed on dangerous driver

A Rapid City man responsible for the death of a 17 year old girl is on his way to jail. Christopher Rollins has been sentenced to two years less a day after pleading guilty to dangerous driving causing the death of Jodie Lynn Vandenberghe. Rollins was behind the wheel of an SUV that lost control, on a gravel road near Bethany last year. Vandenberghe was killed when she was ejected from the vehicle.

RHA CEO stepping down.

The Brandon R.H.A. will soon need new leadership. C.E.O. Carmel Olsen is making it official, saying she will be stepping down from her position at the end of the year. Olsen tells 880 CKLQ that it's simply time to move on

Olsen has been at that position for about eight years. Olsen says one of the things she is most proud of seeing happen during her tenure was the continued advancement of the Regional Health Centre.

B.S.D. like idea of a B.U. partnership.

A new and improved relationship between Brandon University and the School Division could be good news for students. B.U. has brought forward the idea of an enhanced partnership as part of it's long term strategy. The Division likes that idea. SuperIntendent Doctor Donna Michaels says that's a good idea and could open up the door for several new projects.

Doctor Michaels it could kick open the door to a whole new learning experience.

City-AMM Tussle Growing

A Brandon councillor doesn't want to play nice anymore the Association of Manitoba Municipalities. The A.M.M. pulled its convention out of Brandon and that has angered city hall and other municipalities. Councillor Ken Fitzpatrick says it might be time to demand the Association open its books for a possible audit
